This panel of Mental Health Professionals will discuss the state of mental health on teens in the Afrolatino community and how they are adjusting to life and the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Panelists

Patricia Telfort, LMSW is social worker passionate about advocating for youth, families and  communities. She has over fourteen years of social and legal services experience assisting many  clients, especially those most marginalized. Patricia founded Peer Action Towards Empowering  Self, Inc. (PATES) to help youth navigate higher education and the world of work while focusing  on their wellness. Patricia earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from New York University  followed by a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University. Patricia then earned  her Social Work License and Certificate to teach undergraduate and graduate students of social  work. She uses her education and experience to motivate clients and continue grassroots,  frontline endeavors to help them achieve their goals. Jennifer Paulino is a health and wellness professional committed to supporting the well-being of adults and youth at work, school, and life. She is a graduate of New York University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Gender and Sexuality studies. She holds a Master of Public Health from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, specializing in Sociomedical Sciences and Health Promotion.  Jennifer is also trained as a Certified Executive and Transformation Coach, helping professionals make positive changes both professionally and personally. Jennifer brings over 15 years of experience in health education and public health for the New York City school system, supporting students, educators, families, and school communities with the knowledge, skills, and resources to thrive inside and outside of school. Dr. Angel Jones is an educator, activist, and critical race scholar with experience in K-12 and higher education. Her research explores the impact of racism on the mental health of Black students with a focus on racial microaggressions, Racial Battle Fatigue, and gendered-racism. She is currently a visiting assistant professor at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville in the Department of Educational Leadership. Dr. Jones is also a public scholar who uses social media as an educational tool to increase access to academic scholarship. Alexa Cox is currently studying psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University and has a huge interest in understanding the human mind and behavior, thus facilitating how we understand our emotions, interact with others and make decisions. She is a growing advocate for the mental health and well-being for teenagers and young-adults, who are now on the path to enter the responsibilities of adulthood and will be the next generation to improve society for the future, much like herself.

Roxanne Cox, MA is a public health professional with over 20 years of experience in Clinical Research and Operations as well as Health Education and Promotion. She has a passion for minority health disparities and health equity with a focus on women and children. Mrs. Cox received a Master of Arts in Community Health Education from Adelphi University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Pre-Medicine from Virginia State University. As longtime advocate and supporter for the Afrolatino Community, she is a Board Member of the Afrolatin@ Project and Afrolatin@ Festival of NYC.


Trystan Fields-Newton is a New York native, second generation American-born Panamanian and a well accomplished scholar. Trystan matriculated through the public school system in Baldwin, New York and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in English from her beloved alma mater; Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, AL. She then continued her education at Auburn University, Auburn, AL where she earned a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Trystan currently resides in Auburn, AL and is employed as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor working with clients that are affected by substance abuse. She currently holds her associate counseling license and is working under supervision to attain LPC status. Trystan is an ordained elder in the non-denominational church and enjoys pursuing her God-given purpose through the avenue of counseling. Trystan is a proud Afro-Latina that educates many about the historical connections between Africa, the Caribbean and Latin American countries.

3-3:45pm from Encanto to Elecciones: Representation & Reactions to Colombia’s Election of Francia Marquez

Special Guests visiting us from Colombia, Kombilesa Mi, music artists and cultural advocates, Kombilesa Mi join us to discuss the impact of the recent presidential election victory of Gustavo Petro and Francia Marquez.

Kombilesa Mí is born from the rich musical and historical heritage of San Basilio de Palenque, the first free black town in the Americas, fuses the traditional sounds of the community with urban music. They use traditional drums, their own creations of metal handmade drums, the marímbula and rhyme and rap in Spanish and the traditional Palenquera language, a fusion with African Bantu, Portuguese, French, and English. The new genre is called RFP, which stands for Rap Folklorico Palenquero and includes cumbia, son de negro, mápale and son palenquero.

About Bethânia N. Gomes

Bethânia N. Gomes is the daughter of the Brazilian civil rights activist Beatriz Nascimento. Her mother introduced her to images of the Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey which inspired her to pursue a dance career as a classical dancer at a young age. Influenced by her mother’s work, Bethânia fosters the work of black youth in classical ballet. As a young dancer, she was part of the Dance Theater of Harlem, where she was mentored by Arthur Mitchell and became the first Afro-Brazilian Principal Dancer in a major ballet company. Today she’s a faculty member at Dance Theater of Harlem, a choreographer and recently published her mother’s poetry book TODAS AS DISTANCIAS.

Eduardo Brechó is a Brazilian producer and songwriter, founder and leader of the band Aláfia, based in São Paulo - Brasil. He collaborated with many of the biggest artists of contemporary Brazilian music and performed in 14 countries. His music is very related to afro-brazilian tradition, specially Yoruba root in which he is initiated. As a singer/songwriter he played at the legendary venue Minton's Playhouse 3 months in a row in 2021. He also played at Nublu Jazz Festival in October of 2021 and other jazz clubs. He also performed at the Summerstage in Central Park. As a DJ, he has already toured in many countries like France, Colombia, Cuba, UK, Canada, Mexico and the US. When in New York, he has a residency at Studio 151 and Rise Radio. In the US he played with many great names of the DJ scene, especially brazilian music, funk and soul related, like DJ Spinna, Natasha Diggs, etc 

Beatriz Nascimento

(12 July 1942 – 28 January 1995) was an Afro-Brazilian academic and activist. She was an influential participant of the Black Movement of Brazil from its beginnings in the 1960s until her death. Through her academic research, she evaluated the importance of quilombos as autonomous spaces for people of African descent during the colonial period and challenged the political environment and racial policies of the government toward Afro-Brazilians. Her scholarship on the invisibility of black women, and particularly non-Anglo women of the African diaspora had an international impact on research regarding the complexities of the black experience and lack of attention focused on Afro-Latinas in transnational feminism.
